Remember Your Childhood Through Rhymes
Tokyo-Ten Best New Illustrator 1995
In 1994 I created an illustration of well-known nursery rhymes I’d heard growing up as a boy. I’d always loved illustrating, even from a young age, but at 24 I wanted to paint something epic; something that I could show my children one day and something that I knew most other people wouldn’t be able to duplicate. I called it THE VALLEY OF RHYME.
The illustration took me six months to complete. A large watercolor, covered in detail for the mind to animate, explore and enjoy. Pleased with my creation, I entered it into a contest, held at the Tokyo National Museum that same year and the painting won! - Best New Illustrator in 1995.
And then… the book
A decade later, with graphic design added to my creativity, I decided to make The Valley of Rhyme into a book. After finding a publisher, I toiled at my computer for months; determined to make something as worthy as the artwork itself. A large, 13” x 13” heirloom quality book. A book that stood out from all the others and a full-sized 24” x 36” poster to accompany it. By 2007 it was complete.
